In early 2018, Cape Town, South Africa, made headlines as one of the first major cities in the world to face a substantial water crisis. With water shortages such as this one becoming more and more probable, environmental agencies and governments around the world are seeking ways to promote water conservation among the populace. One of the simplest ways to do this is to install a low-pressure, or low-flow, shower head.
According to statistics, showering accounts for up to 30 percent of the average American’s daily water usage. Much of the problem is that older shower heads put out between five and eight gallons of water per minute. A low-flow shower head, on the other hand, sends water out at a rate of just two gallons per minute.
In addition to cutting down on water usage, a secondary benefit is that homeowners will see a lower energy bill when using a low-pressure shower head — especially those who enjoy luxuriating in long, hot showers. Because hot water needs to be heated with fuel, cutting down on the amount of water used will lead to a corresponding reduction in the monthly fuel bill.
